Experience is the name everyone gives to
their mistakes. –Oscar Wilde
THINK ABOUT IT
ARE AFRICAN AMERICANS PRISONERS OF THEIR GENETICS?
Why are so many of our children born out of wedlock? Why is there so much
promotion on sex? It is hard to watch a commercial or movie without someone
going to bed, but it is so appealing to us, why?
Some years back there was a lecture by the author to the book, Bell Curve. In
summation, the book promoted sociobiology. Sociobiology promotes the idea that
our genes (genetics) determine behavior and intelligence. The interpretation of
some thinkers is that African Americans are inferior academically because of our
genes.
I need to clarify something here. Some label sociologist, Edward Wilson as neo-
Darwin, borrowing from his theory of what had come to be known as the survival of
the fittest. Darwin (1859) only did research on species of the animal kingdom who
lacked the ability to reason and think critically. It was Edward Wilson (1975) who
borrowed Darwin’s theories and applied it to humans and the concept of genetic
determination.
Sociologists believe that behavior is shaped by culture; sociobiologists believe that
behavior is determined by our genes. The sociobiologist may say, their theories are
right by observing the African American community and noting our inability to control
our sexual behavior. A sociologist may say, African Americans, or Hispanics for that
matter are victims of their environment. What do you say?
If I may intrude on this debate, I would say that both sociologist and sociobiologist
are climbing up the wrong tree. The reality is that God has given humanity,
regardless of race, the desire for sex. God has also given humanity the ability and
will to control our sexual behavior. Along with this reality is something called choice.
We choose to accept God, we choose to use or not use the abilities God has given to
us.
We are not prisoners of our genes; we are prisoners to our weaknesses. The
problem is we have joined society in identifying our weaknesses as love or having
fun. Those are my thoughts, what do you think?
