Women at work: Building Basics for women volunteers

Lowe’s How-To Clinics prepare Habitat volunteers for Women Build event

Kalamazoo, MI— Habitat for Humanity International’s Women Build project is coming to Kalamazoo this spring
to build a home in partnership with a local Kalamazoo family. To help volunteers get a jump-start on their building
skills, Lowe’s, underwriter of Women Build, is hosting How-To clinics, March 20-April 24, at its Portage store.

The Women Build program brings women from all walks of life together to learn construction skills and then use those skills to be
part of the solution to poverty housing. This May, local women volunteers here will add to the more than 1,500 Habitat for Humanity
houses built by women throughout the United States and in dozens of other countries as part of the Women Build program.
Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity received a $5,000 grant from Lowe’s for the upcoming Women Build. Lowe’s awarded grants
to just 200 U.S. affiliates.

Women Build How-to clinics are open to women who are interested in volunteering for the local Women Build. Each clinic is limited to
10 participants. There is no cost to enroll and Lowe’s will provide the supplies. Each of the six clinics, led by Lowe’s store
employees, will teach women volunteers home construction basics and offer opportunities to practice new skills. Women will also
learn tool safety tips and build the confidence they will need on the build site. Volunteers will have an opportunity to use their skills on
a Women Build planned with Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity in May.

The free clinics will take place on Saturday mornings, from 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m., at Lowe’s, 5108 S. Westnedge Avenue, Portage on
the following dates:

How to Safely Use Hand and Power Tools                March 20
How to Frame for Walls and Roofs                        March 27
How to Install Exterior Siding                                April 3
How to Install Roofing Shingles                                April 10
How to Install Insulation and Drywall                        April 17
How to Finish Interior with Paint and Trim                April 24

To register for a clinic, or volunteer for the Women Build, May 4-9, contact Sonja Roseman at Kalamazoo Valley Habitat for Humanity,
