'RACE: Are we so Different?' is a powerful, thought-provoking family exhibit which uses
history, science and lived experience, to explore human variation and reveal the reality – and
unreality – of race.  Through film, still photography, interactive components and programming,
the exhibit invites us to explore race as well as the impact of race as an economic, political and
cultural construct.  More information and resources on the exhibit can be found on the website:

What are you and your organization doing to improve diversity, inclusion and race
relations?
Be intentional! We are using the upcoming Race Exhibit and the expanded 2010
YEAR OF DIALOGE ON RACE to push our community into high gear.   How will you
contribute? In celebrating our successes as a community, we've been able to
accomplish a lot over the past 2 years.  We have exposed the idea of the RACE
exhibit to over 100 SW Michigan organizations and have actively engaged over 50.
We have forged new relationships and made new friends. We've exposed people to
new ways of thinking of race.  This is great and cause for celebration, but we can do
more and we MUST do more.  Again, how will you contribute?  If you are actively
engaged, THANK YOU!!!  If you are not sure how you can contribute, or be involved,
here are a few ways:

1. Join one of the RACE Exhibit Committees (Religion, Youth, Education, Art,
Marketing, Outreach...).  These committees will be once again meeting to share best
practices amongst each other and generate ideas to engage the entire community in
dialogue.
2. Organize a discussion/workshop/forum on your area of expertise either for the
community at large or your organization.
3. Plan a group trip to view the exhibit  (co-workers, colleagues, classes, etc...)

Fire Historical Arts and Cultural Collective held a simple Root Beer Summit on Race
& Diversity which was a huge success.  In a casual, laid-back atmosphere, 50
residents of Greater Kalamazoo came together to discuss race. While there was a
wide range of experiences and perspectives, participants agreed on this - that NOW
is the time for us as a community to rally together and improve race relations.  We
have the talent and energy to become a beacon of hope for the entire state of
Michigan and the nation.

So, what are you doing?!?! If you or your organization is planning an
event/forum/discussion/training/workshop etc. that is tied into the themes of RACE:
Are we so different? please let us know.  If you have an idea but don't know how to
implement it, let us know...we might know another organization you can meet with.

The goal is to have a varied program of events (with minimal conflict) and reach as
many SW Michgian residents as possible.
