Community Voices A News Resource ... A Positive Perspective!
|
Today I offer a Talk It Up Thought. I’m not asking you to agree or to disagree. I’m
simply asking you to think about what is being said. So, here we go.
When it comes to the negative behavior of some of our young people, many people
have placed the blame for this on many things.
Things such as, the lack of good parenting, no father in the home, racism, poverty,
lack of spiritual guidance, the society we live in, and much more, and they could very
well be right.
But I also think that no matter who, what, or where we place the blame, some of the
blame has to be placed on the young people themselves. If a young person is
capable of thinking clearly and knowing right from wrong, then we can’t let them off
the hook by not placing some of the blame on them. Sure there are things in our
community, our society and our lives that have a negative effect on our young people,
thus causing them to sometimes respond in a negative way. I’m not disputing that.
What I’m saying is this. There are some of our young people who are doing negative
things and they know these things are wrong. If you know something is wrong and
you do it anyway, then the blame for your actions has to start with you. We can’t
continue to make excuses for our young people when they know what they are doing
is wrong.
They have to understand that when they knowingly make bad choices, they will suffer
bad consequences.
We must help our young people to understand that being poor and dealing with
poverty does not mean that they are dumb, ignorant, or prone to violence. Being poor
and dealing with poverty simply means that they don’t have money. It does not mean
that they shouldn’t use common sense when making choices in life.
We have to stop passing the buck and blaming others for some the actions of not
only our young people but for some of our adults as well.
Yes, there are many things that will affect our young people’s behavior and the
choices they make, I understand that. But I also understand that sometimes, some
of the blame has to start with them, and you should understand that too.
I’m Buddy Hannah, and I won’t say anything bad about that if you don’t. And
remember this … a lot of the success our young people will have will depend on the
support they have at home.
Good day Deona and Iyana.
